The colonel declares that the interests of the people come before personal preference and says he will hold his position until the convention chooses. He urges direct primaries on nomination and notes the race is on as he prepares a political interview in Boston today.
New York dispatch reports Theodore Roosevelt replying that he will accept the Republican nomination for President if tendered and will adhere to the decision until the convention. The letter, read at Roosevelt’s offices in New York, endorses direct primaries and the people’s will. Governors Glasscock Aldrich Bass Carey Osborn Stubbs Hadley authored the urging letter to Roosevelt.
Lawrence reports a riot in front of Paul Chabishall at Elm and Short streets as police clashed with thousands of foreign textile workers. Dozens were felled by clubs. militia and cavalry arrived to push the mob back and within an hour the strikers retreated home.
The report says several police officers were injured in a fracas as suspects were struck with hickory sticks. Officer John J. Kelliher was hit in the back by a rock after an arrest and pressed on to the station with the detainee. Inspector Michael Byron was struck by a window thrown wood.

In New Bedford on February 25 the polweavers and loomfixers allied with the I W W voted to strike at Beacon and Grinnell mills starting tomorrow morning. A 10 percent wage increase request was denied. The Portuguese I W W branch pledged support with 300 workers ready to strike in solidarity with the Lawrence action if asked.
Police identified 42 year old William Bowler of 16A Broadway Somerville who leaped in front of a tunnel train at Essex Street station yesterday at 10 55 AM and was killed.
William Bowler a long-time Somerville resident born in England leapt before an incoming northbound train at the south entrance of the station. Observed by John Barry the ticket chopper Bowler appeared healthy but recently nervous and despondent over business troubles. He left his boarding place about 10 AM yesterday and left no note.
Jordan Judson Rollins a prominent lawyer formerly of Portland Missouri died in New York from poisoning after an acute quinsy attack He was president of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of New York and a member of several clubs.
Two men were severely injured when a team of horses attached to a hack ran away in Canterbury West Roxbury after a funeral. Samuel Baracewiscz 40 of South Boston and Charles J Andrews an orderly at Carney Hospital suffered injuries. Baracewiscz remained home with head injuries while Andrews has both legs fractured at Carney Hospital.
A tragic incident reports sixty horses killed when their herd crashed into a telegraph pole. Details are continued on Page Third Column.
The supply ship Celtic under Lieutenant Owen Till arrived at Charlestown navy yard after a tempestuous voyage from Hampton Roads. A 48 hour gale south of Cape Sable and Nantucket drove the vessel off course, with mountainous seas calmed by oil. Lieutenant Hill, rising from enlisted ranks, served aboard during the storm and the ship proceeds to repairs.
More than three score people were driven from their beds early yesterday morning when flames were discovered in the three story six tenement house at 127 and 129 Second Street Chelsea.
Mrs Louis Seigel residing on the third floor rear was awakened by flames bursting through rear windows at eight. She screamed and fled toward the front stairs as the back of the house burned and escape was cut off. Other family members' screams drew neighbors. narrow stairs filled with a panicked crowd not fully clothed.
Governor I gene N. Foss says the Democratic candidate will win and that a Roosevelt Taft clash will hurt both sides. He notes Republicans argue over policies long held by the Democratic Party and urges calm, claiming there is nothing to fear.
Charles P. Taft, brother of President Taft, declared here tonight that Roosevelt will not win the nomination and that the Republicans will beat him. He attributed Roosevelt’s unpopularity in the party to his speech at Columbus, and emphasized the remark as his personal opinion.
