Rhode Island Divorce Bills Alter Law And Penalties
The Rhode Island House proposed sweeping changes to divorce law. Key points include that divorces arising from causes outside the state require local jurisdiction, a one year wait before re-marriage for petitioners, and a five year prohibition for respondents. The court could refer intra state crimes to the Attorney General and compel witness recognizances. A desertion penalty ranges from six months to three years imprisonment.
