Parson Brownlow Blasphemous Blackguard and Other Notes
A collage of hostile jibes and anecdotes from the era includes Parson Brownlow denounced as a consummate blackguard with a costly martyrdom, a Rome beauty dying young from floral excess, presidential quips on Fremont and Butler, Beecher's tale of an honest assay officer, a Durham selectman’s flight with a seductress, and cotton prices shaping Plaquemines Parish farming. Also notes a New York club house for travelers, Washington pride over Mount Vernon, and Cameron’s victory over a Maori tribe with casualties on both sides.
Treasury bond bill aims to issue 200 million loan
The Stevens measure proposes borrowing up to 200 million dollars in the current fiscal year to fund government needs. It allows sale of bonds redeemable after five to forty years, with interest not exceeding six percent. It also covers issuance of Treasury notes and deduction of costs, and sets tax exemptions for bonds. The bill’s intent is to replace part of the 1863 loan act. The Senate and House actions and related political notes are described, including Navy appropriations and other political updates.
