Americans Defeat Spaniards in Shore Standoff at St Thomas

A quarrel between sailors from the US cruiser Columbia and the Spanish cruiser Rio de la Plata broke out on shore in St Thomas. A U S sailor was critically wounded after a knife attack, others suffered minor injuries, and Spaniards fled to their ship.

Union oratory trips up crew of sixNorwegian sailors

Six Norwegian sailors working aboard the six mast schooner Eleanor A Percy balked at boarding and quit after an oratory delivered by John Lind walking delegate, who used a gutter style of persuasion. Lind was arrested on Commercial Street for persuading a sailor to desert before contract end. The captain reported the incident at the harbor police station. Lind was bailed by Seamen’s Union secretary Frazer.

Cape Cod Ice Reaches Record Thickness Along Shore

Cape Cod Bay ice two months of accumulation stretches miles along the eastern shore with a width up to 12 feet. The ice blocks harbor access from Dennis to Wood End, trapping Provincetown harbor and endangering incoming vessels. Local fishermen report ten men caught in the lee at Provincetown as residents await breakup after 30 years.
