Washington reports Chicago won the fair's House vote amid New York delays and partisan intrigue. Congressmembers from New York, Massachusetts, Maine and other states shifted bids across ballots, narrowing to Chicago and New York. Despite hopes, New York failed to unite, and Chicago secured the prize amid a possible 1893 postponement.
The southeast storm Saturday nearly finished the Pocahontas wreck on Block Island. The stern is gone to the mizzenmast and the spanker mast broken off twenty feet above deck. Providence riggers secured standing rigging and iron work this past week. Fifty tons of coal have washed ashore.
The west bound Pacific express on the Fitchburg railroad was halted at East Fitchburg today after a cylinder head on engine No 20 burst. Fitchburg provided aid and the trip resumed with minimal delay.
At the opening of the Superior Criminal Court this morning the jury in the malicious burning case against Join $. Herion and Ias son Henry terion reported they were unable to agree. The trial of Henry Greenberg for selling fire to his furniture store on Essex street, Lawrence, on the night of Nov 4 1859, was resumed.
Ottawa February 24 Sir John A McDonald announced that the Hon C H Tupper Minister of Marine and Fisheries had left for Washington to represent Canada in the Atlantic fishery negotiations.
Braintree officials grant an electric street railway franchise as petitioned by Hon. F. A. Hobart Senator James A. Stevens and others. The action was taken February 24 by the town selectmen marking a major infrastructure initiative.
A powder barrel exploded today at Cienaga Station, a Havana suburb, destroying a house and injuring thirty workers, seven seriously. Local officials stated the accident occurred in the morning and emergency crews rushed to the scene to treat the injured and secure the area.

In a New York billiard tournament today Catton and Schaefer win two games. Daly beats Ives in an eight inch ball line game. Scores feature long inning lines and high runs, with Schaefer and Catton posting strong averages and Daly showing 138 in one set.
The Aldermen met with President Bond and reviewed the year's estimates totaling 214,318 with receipts of 250,500. Increases include highways to 43,100 police 13,940 schools 52,675 and interest fund 89,000 while poor and some departments see reductions. The budget is 11,768 higher than last year and advances to a second reading.
Duncan C. Harrison, star of the Paymaster troupe, was stabbed Sunday night in Chicago by fellow actor H. Brinker. A heavy overcoat saved Harrison’s life. Brinker was arrested.
From Puantix Arizona a courier reports a massive Hassayampa flood early Saturday killing thirty four workers at the lower dam and threatening wider valley losses. White workers outnumber three Chinese. Wickenberg reportedly safe while damages to dams and property could total eight hundred thousand dollars with many more deaths possible.
Fire at 309 East Water Street Elmira destroys stock worth 15000 in Stuart and Beach and damages neighboring shops Harris and Sons 311 and C W Young 307. Total building loss about 15000. Also fires in Pittsfield Dupreare and Trumbull with insured losses and farm stock destroyed. One horse injured in Ladder 8 wagon collision.
In St Albans near Montreal Jean Dubois a farmer killed his wife two children and his mother in law during a jealous outburst. The bodies were found after the neighbor Mrs Dubois discovered the gruesome scene. Dubois was arrested as villagers feared lynching.
Naval orders list Commander William H. Whiting assigned to duty at the New York navy yard. Commander Yates Stering to be ready to command the Dolphin. J. R. Freeman to special duty at Quintard Iron Works in New York. Ensign Mills C. Goergas to inspect ordnance at Medvale and Standard Steel Works in Thurston and Penn on March 7. William Wilburn detached as ordnance inspector at held vals and Standard Steel Casting Works in Shuarston, Penn, on March 8 and placed on waiting orders.
The Haverhill committee, after dissolving and being reappointed, sets July events for the 70th anniversary. Rev. Samuel W. Duncan will be the orator, with John G. Whittier invited to prepare an ode and Dr. John Crowell to furnish a sketch.
Captain Smith of the bark Meteor reports a hazardous voyage from Cadiz to St John s N S with heavy gales and ice. A mate and a seaman were washed overboard and lost. After nine days in a vast ice field the ship was leaking but the Marengo rescued the crew, bringing them to this port.
The Rhode Island Yacht Club, at Narragansett Hotel in Providence, held its third annual meeting and banquet with 125 attendees including Governor Ladd ex mayor Hayward and Navy officers. Officers were elected: Commodore Hasbrouck, vice Commodore Sands, rear Commodore Bloomer, President Slade, Secretary Eddy, Treasurer Greene, measurers Stillwell and Warren, trustees Bloomer Wright Carver. Talks covered sail measurement and yachting’s naval auxiliary role, with remarks from Ladd Drake Pierce Lawless Adderman Stillwell and others. Letters from Brown President Andrews and Navy commander Eaton were read and Reeves’s Orchestra provided music.
