Connecticut Democratic Convention Ends with Support for Union

The convention adopted resolutions defending the Constitution and Union, attacking national banking schemes, criticizing wartime costs, and pledging care for soldiers. Speakers urged united action for McClellan and the Democratic ticket as the crowd cheered for the army and the Union before adjourning after five.

Rebel cavalry surprise Tennessee unit on Virginia Road

On the 22d, a battalion of the 11th Tennessee cavalry on the Virginia road was surprised by rebel cavalry at daylight. Two companies of List Ind and 2d N C infantry with Col. Davis fought through with 3 killed. many captured, including most of Davis's command. Powell's Bridge outpost repulsed rebels thrice as Col. Pickering withdrew. Col. Davis seriously wounded.

Deserters Hung. Portersville Foe at 600 Strong

The Richmond Sentinel reports 12 deserters hanged on the 16th and 7 on the 13th. Rome Courier notes 600 enemy troops near Portersville, 44 miles from Rome, with another force advancing via Weaver's Mills. Savannah Republican calls Lake City fight a disgrace for our officers and men.

Wreck of the Chicaben off Tusket Island and other early notes

Yarmouth Massachusetts reports the schooner Chicaben wrecked off Tusket Island while sailing from Weymouth to the West Indies with lumber. The Steamer Cahawba from New Orleans arrived via Key West with 540 bales of cotton. The gunboat Hendrick Hudson reached Key West with three prizes. The Steamer Cellar sighted the ship Dreadnought on the 23rd with a damaged rudder. Coal prices at Scranton auction reached 6 624 810 per ton amid volatility. The steamship Alpha carried Confederate passengers to Halifax from Thomasville via Bermuda as of February 24.

The Bohemian Disaster at Port Lane

News from Fen29 reports divers failing to salvage the Bohemian amid heavy seas. The hull and deck remain intact while the upper works crumble. Twenty three mails were recovered today, likely all except one bag bound for Philadelphia.
