Rio de Janeiro Sinks In Fog After Hitting Hidden Rock
Captain Ward is believed lost with the Rio de Janeiro which struck a rock near the Golden Gate in dense fog. About 122 drowned, 79 saved from 201 aboard including Rounseville Wildman the U S consul at Hong Kong. Pilot Jordan rescued. Ward’s fate reported as locked in his cabin.

In Lawrence on February 22 George Owen superintendent of the Lower Pacific mills died by suicide with a revolver in a private residence. He had suffered grip and business worries in Providence. Survived by wife Lydia Owen and daughters Lydia and Mrs Weeks. Police and medical examiner handled the case. autopsy not deemed necessary. Former Police Captain Romanzo H Wilkins became violently insane following a long illness.

Captain Wilkins Mainstay of Boston Police Fades With Illness
Captain Romanzo H. Wilkins, longtime Boston police veteran born 1830, served 45 years and led detention at the old Tombs and City Prison. After retirement, he grew ill and was kept in a padded cell before being moved to the Boston Insane Hospital in Dorchester. His health deteriorated after recent symptoms, with grave fears for his life.
