Windom's Successor Views on Silver and Tariff

Washington reports President Harrison nominates Charles Foster for Secretary of the Treasury and Martin A. Knapp for Inter-State Commerce Commissioner. Foster is seen as conservative on finance and anti silver, while Knapp replaces Judge Augustus Schoonmaker, a long-serving commissioner, amid political maneuvering at the White House.

Ex Gouvernor Foster chosen as Secretary of the Treasury

Ex Governor Charles Foster of Ohio is named by President Harrison for the Treasury post. The President says Foster’s views align with his party and he hopes Foster will accept. Foster states he will maintain current policies and opposes silver free coinage. He expects Senate action soon and plans to come to Washington after confirmation. Foster’s early career and Ohio governorship are outlined. Also noted are Martin Knapp and political letters on voting reforms and the Hare system.
