Fitchburg Railroad Transforms Western Freight with Hoosac Tunnel Hub
The Hoosac tunnel opening in 1875 spurred a sweeping program to enlarge Fitchburg lines and Boston terminals. Fitchburg expanded Somerville yards and Charlestown facilities, leased Constitution wharf, and built a sea wall and dredged Miller’s river to handle growing western freight. The project created 80 miles of side tracks, 80 acres of terminal space, and major yard revamps to support rising through traffic and passenger demand.

Milwaukee Bad Boy Ignores Masonry in Goats Lodge Prank
A reader recounts a wild tale of a boy and his friend playing lodge with a goat, peppering it for a pretend initiation, causing chaos with the goat roaming the house and crowding staff, leading to a dramatic ministerial interruption and a lodge shut down in laughter. The article then shifts to a detailed Ontario dairy meeting report on ensilage, pastures, and cheese making with experiments at Guelph, including costs, temperatures, and milk results for cows fed ensilage vs turnips.

Maine Senate Clam Question Sparks Debate
In the Maine senate a clam bed protection bill drew lively debate. Senator Gushee of Knox urged laws to guard clam flats as small boat fishermen along the coast rely on clams for bait while beds depopulate due to canners. Senator McLaughlin of Portland warned it would burden summer visitors and clambake lovers. He cited constituents’ views with the Latin phrase Dum tacent clamant meaning while they are silent they cry out.

Noted Boston visit reveals Mrs Wingate on women’s health
A Globe reporter in Haverhill interviews Mrs. M. W. Wingate, a famed advocate for female health. She describes long practice, early medical interest sparked by her Harvard-educated father, and her use of Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure despite proprietary status. She recalls a dramatic cure and discusses dangers of fashion and lifestyle on women's health, while noting potential salary offers from a Walla Walla medical college.
