Perkins Institution presses ahead with new platen press

The Perkins Institution at South Boston marks 49 years of embossing work for the blind and celebrates major upgrades funded by supporters. Dennis Reardon, a blind mechanic, leads improvements improving impression quality, adjusting stroke, thicker plates, and a simplified Adams-based design. The office now houses 800 pounds of embossing type, can publish about a dozen volumes yearly, and uses mixed upper and lower case type. New electrotype plates use thin backs with tin wash for easier printing, and Gardiner Maine paper ensures durability for raised letters. Recent publications include Longfellow editions and Freeman and Pope works, though funding remains tight, prompting calls for a permanent endowment.
