The Pope lauded the Baltimore council as an honor to America and the church.
London rumors say Mr. Gladstone will denounce the Speaker for ruling against postponing the Dublin prosecution debate and for barring Mr. Dillon from explaining crown officials actions. Mr. Parnell to propose closure rule changes including six hour debate and higher majority to enforce closure.
London February 20 Mr Slagg a Gladstonian was elected member of Parliament for Burnley by 5026 votes to 4481 for Mr Thursby a Conservative. The last election saw Peter Rylands Liberal Unionist winning 4209 votes and James Greenwood Home Ruler 4166.
Dunarm Feb 20 Mr O'Brien addressed a mass meeting at Michelstown attended by about eight thousand people. Resolutions backed the plan of campaign and condemned the Speaker for gagging Mr Dillon during the recent debate. A fund was started in Killarney to defray traversers expenses in the conspiracy trial.

At Albany on February 20, Secretary Manning signaled acceptance of the New York bank presidency with Jordan as vice president, though some papers questioned certainty. Western district houses 81 of 272 national members while opposition movement is disapproved and Grand Central Trotting Circuit backs the national group.
Pitrssura Penn February 20. Matthew Bernatz a Liberty Street flour broker has been missing for several days. It is said he has gone to Canada. Before leaving he borrowed 10 000 from friends and fellow merchants and allegedly took the money with him.
In Cuarcestown on February 20 the twenty fourth joint ballot was cast for United States Senator. Camden received 39 votes, Gates of the Greenbackers 88, Governor Wilson 4, with 8 scattering.
Hartford Massachusetts? actually Hartford Conn February 20 Professor M B Riddle of Hartford Theological Seminary accepts election to the chair of New Testament literature and exegesis at Western Theological Seminary Allegheny City Penn to succeed Professor Warfield who is called to Princeton.
Police uncovered a planned rooftop attack in South Boston after residents reported bricks and paving stones moved to the roof of a four story corner building on Federal and Kneeland streets. Bricks were arranged along the coping with loose mortar, suggesting a fusillade aimed at passing streetcars. Officers removed the material and increased vigilance, guarding coal sheds and watching nearby entrances for suspicious activity. The plot, linked to rioting fears after earlier South Boston trouble, remains unsolved with no single suspect identified.
In New York on February 20 Judge Barrett sentenced Unger for murdering Bohle and shipping the body to Baltimore in a trunk. The court indicated the extreme penalty would be life imprisonment if applicable.

Some counties fare poor or fair with many fields frozen or bare while Michigan Wisconsin and Minnesota show generally favorable conditions and corn movement slows in several states. Road conditions hinder grain movement in Dakota.

Revenue collector Wilson seized the large distilling house of Zell Schwatcher and Co. for refilling packages contrary to law. The firm sent a representative to Washington to confer with the department. The distillery is one of the largest in the city.
Drapwood North Dakota February 20 Merchants National Bank failed to open yesterday with branches at Central City Sturgis and Sundance also closed. Spearfish branch remains open. Liabilities exceed 425000 with similar resources. Bank may pay dollar for dollar.
The funeral for James W. Foshay president of the Broadway and Seventh Avenue Railroad was held this afternoon in New York.

The bark Mendota under Captain Hamlin, en route from Bilbao to New York, was abandoned on February 10 off the Western Islands in latitude 45 N after losing her rudder and becoming partially dismasted. Crew were landed at Avonmouth by the British steamer Harvarden under Captain Wilson.
Cambridge strike violence escalated with stone throwing and clubs as cars ran on a Sunday. Police faced a large crowd, arrests followed including a 16 year old named James Friel, and officers protected motorists with revolvers. By 8:20 pm authorities regrouped with mounted units to clear streets.
