Inquiry Into General Hitchcock Leave of Absence
War Department letter from July 12 1855 asks Secretary Jefferson Davis to justify a four month leave of absence for Brevet Brigadier General Hitchcock as his regiment nears active campaigning and he commands the frontier post. The note cites department practice of denying leaves for officers in the field and is addressed to Brevet Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott in New York.
