New York Market Summary on February Day

New York money markets showed ease at 1.14 and a half percent on call. Mercantile paper ranged 4 to 5 and a half percent. Stocks opened weak then firm with Lackawanna leading gains to 12.5 percent and compact round lots traded up. Oregon Transcontinental slipped to 4.65 and Northern Pacific preferred to 4.65. Pullman Palace rose 5 percent to about 11.90. Market closed generally firm with widespread strength and late weakness in Oregon Transcontinental and NP preferred. Total shares traded reached 309,800.

Edson Tufts versus Souhegan bank loan dispute in 1875 78

In a New Hampshire equity case Nathan Matthews borrowed 5000 dollars from Edson Tufts Bank of Milford. Bonds and coupons of the Boston Water Power company were pledged and later assigned to the plaintiff. After a series of transfers, Matthews bankruptcy, and sales, the plaintiff seeks to redeem the bonds from the bank, which contends it purchased them in 1878. Hearing on New York and New England rail line receivership resumes

In Hartford Judge Shipman resumed the hearing on terminating the receivership of the New York and New England road. Simeon E. Baldwin reviewed the 1884 situation, noting a heavy floating debt and limited pledges. A four month limit was discussed, with potential funding plans from stockholders. The court adjourned to 10:30 tomorrow. a decision was expected, then postponed to Thursday in New Haven.
