State loan debate on New York and New England Railroad
The Committee on Railroads reviewed a proposed state loan of 6 million dollars to the New York and New England Railroad. Charles P. Clark outlined the line's history and recent investments, arguing through traffic yields greater profit and that debt relief plus a Waterbury connection would boost dividends. William T. Hart asserted that state gains would flow to taxpayers, while Col. Cannon supported bond prioritization, noting future coal traffic and favorable debt per mile. The discussion moved to savings bank taxation as Boston officials opposed cutting the tax rate, arguing banks’ deposits justify tax duties.
