Lloyd George Upheld as House Defies Bottonley Amendment
London February 18 The House of Commons defeated Horatio Bottomley's amendment condemning government policy on the Versailles treaty by 181 to 40. Lloyd George defended the treaty, urged Germany to pay to the limit of its capacity, and warned against impracticable demands while noting progress: removal of the German fleet army and war materials, and surrender of colonies. He urged balanced budgets and prudent concessions to secure payment. France and England agreed on punishment for war criminals.

Not to Meet Rail Workers
The Association of Railway Executives in Chicago unanimously adopted its labor committee report and refused to participate in national conferences proposed by employees to resolve wage and condition disputes. The committee said pay rates for unskilled labor should be managed by each railway and its workers, and denounced the conferences as a scheme toward railroad nationalization. It argued that labor efficiency and railroad growth conflict with the consolidation of labor unions led by B. M. Jewell and associates.
