German troops cross the Dvina River and advance toward Reval aiming to seize the city within a week. The move is designed to cut Russia off from the Baltic, with Petrograd described as endangered by the new offensive.
Mrs. John Craig known as Mary Young heads to New York en route to France to stay until the war ends. She is joined by her husband and son, with Rose Lee Saltonstall of Milton accompanying them. The Craigs have previous war-zone experience, while the younger John Jr makes his second voyage.
Berlin dispatch reports an official statement declaring hostilities on the Russian front began at noon with an advance on Dvinsk and crossings of the Dvina. Lieutenant Lawrence V. Sperry U S N and Miss Winifred Allen wed at St. Cornelius Chapel on Governor's Island. They traveled by airplane from Massapequa to Governor's Island for the ceremony and were cheered by relatives as the aviator obtained a few hours leave for the wedding.
