Nashua and Dracut report rising tensions as Nashua operatives reject arbitration and warn of no work until Tuesday. A mass meeting endorses firm stance while city police prepare at mill gates. In Dracut, two meetings yield resolve to stay firm with few workers allowed to seek other jobs.
At a Newton aldermanic meeting on February 17 bonds for the city treasurer and other officials were approved. W N Russell was named overseer of the poor for Ward 1. The council authorized $45,200 for March city expenses plus $300 for land in Needham and $300 for city engineer department horses.

London February 17 The Parnell Commission report dominated questions in the House of Commons as Mr Parnell sought government plans. The Appeal Court at Bressels confirms the sentence against M. Corvellain owner of the Antwerp cartridge factory. He was convicted of homicide by imprudence for the September disaster and receives four years six months plus an added eighteen months imprisonment and a 2500 franc fine.
Ottauna Ont Feb 17 Authorities say the modus vivendi will be renewed and Parliament asked for power to reissue licenses to American fishermen off Atlantic coasts before the season. Port land fishermen oppose renewal, arguing costs exceed benefits and urging equal rights for provincial fishermen. A New York Post dispatch notes Ottawa plans to seek renewal.
Washington reports the International American Conference will study committee reports on subsidies for Atlantic Pacific and Gulf steamship lines. Stephen A. Dix longtime musical and dramatic critic for the Boston Transcript died in Minneapolis on Sunday. Born May 19 1825 in Boston he studied at Chauncy Hall and worked for J W Clarke Co. He served as organist and chorister at local churches and later moved West in frail health. He leaves a widow two sons and three daughters. His friends in Boston recall him with warmth and esteem.
Joseph H Hanson of Salem, a retired merchant formerly with Robert Brookhouse, died suddenly at about seventy three. Solomon T Corser, Portland Me notable figure, died last night born 1898 and arrived in 1827. held rail and railroad commissioner roles 1847 to 1873. Benjamin Vaughan Abbott, New York lawyer and brother of Rev Lyman Abbott, died in Brooklyn. author of the National Digest and United States Digest. born Boston 1830. Mrs Jane Twitchell Ware, sister of Rev J H Twitchell, died in Hartford. educated freedmen after the war in Norfolk Charleston and Atlanta. Sir Louis Mallet, famed treaty expert, died in England from influenza. William Jarvis McAlpine, civil engineer, died at New Brighton N Y aged 78.
Newton Club earned 998 points while Norfolk Casino Club scored 396 in an interleague bowling tournament at Newton Club rooms this evening.
The Dover inquest on Hiram Sawtell's death continues with witnesses from Dr Tobey to Detective Shields detailing the body found in Maine and the head’s whereabouts. Testimony confirms the body matches Sawtell while investigators plan further searches in Maine and near the grave, with police seeking witnesses and the possible head.
A Brockton fire at a Cam pello shoe factory destroyed its upper floors and stock, with 12 000 dollar total loss and 2500 dollar insurance from Commercial Union to 1000 plus small policies. other fires in Miller’s Falls and Hegan Me gutted several rooms and stores with losses up to 20 000, insured. Ma hen’s Cushnoc Heights house and Glidden home also burned, causing insured losses and a false alarm at Box 423.
About seven last evening a man resembling Dr Blood, wanted in the Sawtell case, entered John Thompson's Main Street shop in Cambridgeport claiming to be a physician. Thompson accused him, a fight broke out, a window was broken, and Sergeant Alexander arrived to arrest the visitor who gave the name Rev W L D Phillips claiming to be the world’s greatest phrenologist. He said he had an office with Dr Solomon at 75 Court Street Boston and was released.
Bricklayers Union 33 held a mass meeting in Caledonian Hall to argue for the eight hour day with employees outlining benefits while master builders offered no response. Frank K. Foster spoke for employees and J. W. Shields of Union 33 discussed labor classifications. The group later planned a march to Tremont Temple and placed forty five pickets at Swift's North Street project to block replacement workers amid a possible clash with a wealthy Chicago builder.
George Bradford, a Harvard graduate and real estate partner at Blake & Bradford, was thrown from his horse on Beacon Street when an electric car struck the frightened animal. The horse and rider were killed instantly, Bradford died from a broken neck, and police and medical examiners handled the scene as details emerged.

The eleventh annual YMCA reunion was held last evening in Mechanics Hall. About 6,000 people attended from 35,400 tickets sold with three guests per ticket. The hall displayed American colors and a large allegorical republic painting. Fifty musicians conducted by J C Mullaly provided music and a fine concert preceded dancing. Governor Brackett and Mayor Hart attended. The grand march led by F J Mc Laughlin and wife, followed by Governor Brackett, was a highlight.
