Administration OKs direct and indirect subsidies for merchant marine
Washington officials say the administration has agreed on direct subsidies of about 30 million dollars a year for the American merchant marine plus indirect benefits. A sliding scale based on ship speed would adjust the rate from a half to one and three quarters cents per ton per hundred miles. The plan includes mail contracts and reduced railroad rates, with shippers receiving lower cargo rates for exports on EFC vessels.
