Tufts President links church attendance decline to broader religious waning

President E H Capen of Tufts College reports weaker Divinity School attendance amid tuition and higher admission standards. He cites waning religious motive and strong pull of other careers, notes total enrollment 559 with 20 in the Divinity School and 146 women across all departments. Leases Favored By Boston Fruit Exchange

Stormy Sea Brings Mixed Maritime News To Yarmouth

In a gale off Nova Scotia, the steamer Lofton arrived at Lewis wharf after departing Yarmouth. Other vessels made quick crossings, new propellers and steamers set records, and immigration figures show thousands traveling via Yarmouth and Plant lines.

Coal Famine Eased by Fleet of Sixteen Towboats at Harbor

A week of stormy weather caused a coal shortage as sixteen large ocean towboats with about forty barges moved into the harbor. The Shawmut steam collier and six schooners brought in around 65 000 tons of coal, a record for the port. Oil and lumber also arrived in large quantities from multiple ports, with vessels including Harold B. Cousens Laura M. Lunt Josephine Ellicott Brookline and M. Luella Wood supplying pine and other goods from Georgia Florida and Jacksonville.
