Malden Man Foils Robbery and Detains Attacker

Harry E. Archibald of 13 Clark Street Malden surprised a robber in his home at 3 30 pm yesterday after a 30 minute struggle the intruder shot and clubbed Archibald. Archibald overpowered the robber pushed his face through a window wrenched the revolver away and held it to the man's head until the robber telephoned Malden police for the wagon and officers who arrested him.

Lazy jawbones blamed for New England twang

Dr Eugene C Howe of Wellesley College tells a class that the sharp Yankee twang comes from lazy jawbones. He argues natives do not drop the lower jaw enough when speaking and urges looser mouth use and a wider opening to improve pronunciation. Foreigners are said to open the mouth more like singing. Speech is a matter of hygiene.

Quarantine Order Bars European Liners From Harbor

Assistant Surgeon-General Richard H. Creel issued a drastic order preventing liners from European ports from entering Boston harbor for 12 days from their embarkation date. Fin land and Canopic, recently sailed from Europe, are held at Gallups Island to complete the period. The move follows a dozen typhus cases among New York immigrants and aims to stop possible disease from reaching Boston.

O'Brien Dies Suddenly Former Boston Attorney and Official

Charles J. F. O'Brien of 32 Prince Street Jamaica Plain, longtime Boston politics figure and two year assistant register of deeds, died yesterday afternoon at Carney Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral mass will be at St. Thomas Church, Jamaica Plain, burial in New Cavalry Cemetery. Born in 1880 New York, he lived in Boston since youth, educated at Boston Latin, Harvard College and Harvard Law School Class of 1905. He practiced law, served Catholic and charitable groups, and held Knights of Columbus roles in Jamaica Plain.
