California Mails and Treasure aboard Star of the West

The Star of the West arrived New York from Aspinwall with 1,248,507 in treasure on freight, 219 passengers, California mails dated Jan 20, and Europe funds of 560,991 plus 32,000 for Panama borne by the Golden Age steamer. Wells Fargo & Co. were top consignors with 468,100. News from San Francisco reports political and financial matters, a California legislature, new secretary, and various local incidents including a murder near Salt Lake and talks on Mormon, Chinese, and Utah relations.

Funeral of Yale fireman William Miles Jr

Yale College reports the funeral of fireman William Miles Jr who died from a pistol shot. The 3 pm service at Howe Street Church featured President Woolsey and pastors, with a large turnout of fire department members and citizens. A barricaded North Middle area and student vigil followed, as authorities reported one arrest and ongoing investigation.
