A police officer found a smoke filled home behind a tannery near a shoe factory of John A Frye Company. Four people lay dead on a mattress in a room off the kitchen, the scene suggesting possible drug involvement and leaving the exact cause under investigation. The Medical Examiner pursued an inquiry with the District Attorney to shed light on the affair.
Manila dispatches state that on Saturday the U S forces led by Brigadier General Miller captured Iloilo, capital of Panay, after bombardment. Rebels reportedly set the town ablaze before the American advance, while insurgents were warned to surrender by the evening of the 11th.
Several lives reported lost on the Chicago Express near Thorndale Pennsylvania. A broken sail was fatal with multiple deaths and many injuries among passengers. A near Cleveland derailment cost a fireman his life and left seventeen injured. Snowbound trains in New York, Mansfield, and Danbury disrupted service. Derailments claimed the engineer and his son in Montreal bound Delaware & Hudson service. Consolidated limited flyers and suspension of Boston to New Haven routes noted.
A southbound passenger train from Cleveland wrecked near Fleming Park due to a broken rail in extreme cold. The fireman died of injuries and seventeen passengers were badly hurt as locomotives and cars were damaged. The accident blocked the line, caused by a rail failure in frigid weather, while other regional rail and canal facilities faced widespread disruption.
A house behind the John A Frye factory yielded a grisly scene with Edward F Underwood 50 Olive Underwood 24 John Clifford 2 Frances Underwood 8 dead. Unconscious include Robert McMullen 65 Mrs Underwood and Guy Underwood. Police found a stove burning in a smoke filled room. Doctors and officials rushed to the scene as the case continued.
Recruit Fred Gies of Troop K Seventh Cavalry was found guilty of disobedience by a general court martial at Macon Ga. He was sentenced to two months hard labor and forfeiture of $10 per month. Reviewing authorities disapproved the sentence because proceedings extended after 3 PM and authority to sit after hours is unclear. He is to be released and returned to duty.
Lancaster report states the first section of the Chicago express wrecked near Thorndale with several fatalities. The train was due in Philadelphia at 6 50 p m tonight and casualties are being tallied as details emerge.
Snow blockade ties Boston railroad system with depots empty and crowds of suburbanites seeking shelter. Belated engines struggled through at intervals as Union terminals halted traffic early evening. A few trains ran from the Boston & Albany.
