Bangor Maine February 12 divinity students at Bangor Theological School staged a practical joke that sent 50 clergymen fleeing into the snow barefoot and panicked. The convocation week ended with a crowded dormitory scene as eminent clergy slept in cots under the gymnasium, with Bliss Perry of Boston among guests.
About 3 am these clergymen were roused from sleep by a terrible crash that shook the building and halted their theological discussion. The incident left them in terrors as they hurried to assess damage and safety.
Miss Mary Lee Ware said worthy men with independent means should hold political trust. She backed Earnest E. Smith with over two thirds of his campaign funds donated by women friends. She argued women should influence politics without active campaigning, keeping the home as their sphere while promoting deserving male leaders.
Several hundred Chicago clergymen, led by the Christian Endeavor Union, start a campaign to end Sunday mail handling by clerks and carriers. The plan gains support from ministers' associations of Presbyterian, Episcopal, Methodist, Roman Catholic, Jewish and other denominations.
Dorothy Arnold's mother Mrs. Francis R. Arnold returns home to New York denying knowledge of the missing girl's fate or a possible Griscom marriage. Son John W. Arnold says the family has given up the search after exhausting all means.
Mrs Arnold arrived home aboard the Cunard liner Pannonia after a three week visit to Florence Italy to confer on ongoing matters. The voyage included Mediterranean port calls before returning to home shores.
Hudson February 12. Mrs. C W Watson of Gospel Hill, awoken by crackling flames, threw a mattress from a second story window to save her two children Francis age 5 and Lillian age 7 then jumped. All left barefoot to a neighbor a quarter mile away leaving a blood trail on snow and ice. The children suffered foot lacerations and Mrs Watson toes were frozen. The Watsons lost property valued at over 1500 dollars. The fire likely started from an overheated stove.
The 70th Chi Psi convention at the Hotel Astor New York on February 23 24 and 25 will discuss a suitable memorial for Melville W Fuller chief justice of the United States who died last summer. Fuller a Bowdoin College graduate of 1858 was a prominent member of Chi Psi which has chapters in 17 colleges nationwide including Amherst Williams Middlebury and Wesleyan in New England.
Lincoln Day was observed in Boston churches with large crowds. At Union Congregational Church pastor Rev. Allan A. Stockdale led services attended by delegations from multiple veterans and women’s groups including Sons of Veterans and Daughters of Veterans organizations.
John C S Andrews spoke before the South Congregational Church citizenship class on the anniversary of the great liberator. His address traced his early life with scenes tied to that period and drew attention during evening services.
Minnie Nayor a 17 year old Maplewood girl was arrested yesterday on a charge of receiving 810 dollars worth of goods alleged to be stolen by Charles Rowan who is awaiting trial in Suffolk Superior Court. Nayor says the salesman Ronan prompted the sale and she believed the goods were legitimate.
New York reports General Alexander Stewart Webb died at his home at 10 oclock. Born in New York in 1835 he served as chief of staff to General Wade repulsed Pickett s charge at Gettysburg and held Bloody Angle at Spotsylvania. He taught at West Point and led the College of the City of New York from 1870 to 1903.
A dying husband and his wife reportedly signed an agreement in which she would kill herself and the child after his death. Mrs Curtis Guild Jr was elected to the board of directors of the Holy Ghost Aid Society tied to Holy Ghost Hospital in Cambridge. The action names the new director and associates the society with the Cambridge hospital.
New York report says W E D Stokes nephew of philanthropist William Earle Dodge and banker family member wed Miss Helen Ellwood of Denver Colorado in Jersey City on Saturday He is about six years old and she about twenty four the couple had separated from his first wife several years ago.

In Oxford Maine Mrs Lynnwood S Keene killed her 14 year old son Gerald in bed then took her own life. The deed followed a pact signed during her husband's illness that she and their child would die after his death. Mr Keene died yesterday.
Neighbors found Gerald Keene fatally shot in his room and his mother Mrs. Keene dead by suicide in the adjacent bedroom. The revolver lay by both bodies and Dr. H. R. Farris could not save the boy. Relatives report Mrs. Keene showed extreme nervousness after her husband’s death.
Artillery officers guarded the Capitol over concerns of a plot to seize the building. Authorities warned that the structure could be blown up, prompting heightened security measures.
Fair weather expected for Boston with unsettled conditions tomorrow, possible rain and warmer days ahead. Washington forecast notes New England will see fair conditions Monday and Tuesday with light temperature changes and moderate winds from the north and west.
