In Block Island Sound the three masted coal schooner Harry Knowlton struck the Joy Line steamer Larchmont bound from Providence to New York. About 150 people perished, 51 bodies recovered, 19 rescued. many frozen on life boats. Crew of the schooner survived. Bodies washed ashore encased in ice. Many victims were women.

Captain Haley Claims Larchmont Caused Collision
Captain Frank T. Haley and the crew of the Harry Knowlton say the Larchmont steamer bore down in darkness near Watch Hill, despite both vessels’ lights. The schooner, bound from Perth Amboy with coal, sank in 20 fathoms after the crash. all were rescued by life savers and blame rests on Larchmont’s officers.
