A five man gang raided Newtown and nearby for a night without taking goods. They broke into Housatonic railroad depot and Newtown Savings Bank but failed to obtain valuables. They fled toward Hawleyville before being pursued by Waterbury officers who captured four. a fifth escaped. Separate incidents across Chicago and Minneapolis report bold robberies and a shooting by a domestic worker. An Albany assembly bribery scare surrounds a whitewashing report on the ceiling inquiry with a Democratic member acknowledging a bribe offer and names sought.

Suffrage is extended to men 25 and older paying at least 25 dollars in taxes. It guarantees religious liberty free speech and public meetings. Parliament gains legislative and financial control while judges require special legislation for removal.
New York on February 12 saw 76 pictures from James H. Stebbins sold for 169895 at Chickering Hall auction. Meissonier's The Game Lost drew 26300, while M B Jasch of Boston paid 13700 for L Eminence Grise by Gerome and W W Astor paid 10500 for another Gerome work.
