A small ceremony under a snowstorm marked the digging of the first earth for a new $1,000,000 Widener Library memorial at Harvard. George D. Widener and President A Lawrence Lowell led the event amid a 50 guest crowd. The library will hold 1 700 000 volumes and is slated for dedication during Commencement Week in June 1914. Mrs Widener was ill and did not attend the first spadeful. A Gore Hall plate will be placed in the new building.

E J Mitton Dies at 66 Jordan Marsh Vice President

Church Singer and Inventor Joseph M Metzger Dies

Joseph M Metzger, 72, longtime St Marys Church tenor soloist and Concordia Society musical director, invention pioneer of the first talking doll and an electric mandolin attachment for pianos, died at 540 Cambridge Street East Cambridge.
