Danville Civil War vet recalls meeting Booth before Lincoln slaying

Benjamin R. Smithers, a Danville resident and Civil War veteran, says he was among the last to see J Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theatre restaurant on April 14 1865. Booth bought drinks for others and vanished to reach the President's box moments before Lincoln was shot. Smithers served in Company C Light Artillery at Camp Barry near Washington.
