Boston Longshoremen's District Council voted unanimously at Hibernian Hall in Fast Boston to demand five cents extra per hour for general cargo handling. If not granted by February 15, they seek 60 cents per hour after midnight that date and will quit night work unless paid. They warn of importing strike breakers.
Mayor Fitzgerald guided Viceroy Fong of China through Boston, sharing city sites as they discussed American industrial progress. The Mandarin representative spoke through an interpreter, expressing surprise at Boston’s beauty and historic landmarks during a tour that highlighted U S industrial themes.
The crew of the tern schooner Joseph Hay escaped a sinking vessel at Sow and Pigs reef near Vineyard Haven after leaping clear. They were rescued by the tug Dudley Pray and brought ashore this afternoon as the Joseph Hay battered itself onto the rocks.
The Joseph Hay ran aground near the Cuttyhunk shore in Vineyard Sound during a fresh north-northeast breeze while carrying 400 tons of coal from Perth Amboy to St. John. Six crew jumped into a boat as the schooner sank after crashing atop a ledge. The revenue cutter Dexter and tug Dudley Pray rescued the men and landed them ashore. The vessel, built in Cohasset in 1864 and rebuilt to a three master, was 165 tons net burden and owned by Archer C. Puddington of New York.
Three men sought a tooth extraction from Dr James C C Ady at 12H Berkeley street around 1 am. After a painless procedure, the trio left without paying and stole a gold watch, chain, and instruments. The doctor notified police with descriptions, but the suspects were not found.

William Simerson Barrett, publisher of the Boston Advertiser and Record, died at his West Newton home after a brief pneumonia illness. Born December 29, 1850 in Melrose, Barrett led newspapers in Boston and served five terms in the Massachusetts House, including three as Speaker. He was noted for courage in public stances on ambassadors and republican simplicity.
