In a dangerous voyage the steamer America rescued eight crew members from the Rose Osterbrook, a three master bound from Norfolk to New Bedford. The vessel listed leaks after severe weather and a two day gale, frostbite and hunger afflicted the crew before transfer. Provisions followed the vessel’s arrival in harbor and it sailed for Boston.

Nine Seamen Rescued After Shipwreck off New England
The steamship Francisco recovered nine shipwrecked seamen from the four masted schooner George A. McFadden of Bath Maine after a gale battered the vessel off Shinnecock Light. Captain C F Wallace reported hurricane force winds and a rapidly failing vessel as cabins and hatches failed, water flooded the decks, and pumps failed. Rescue occurred when Francisco arrived on February 10 at 12:45 p m. The McFadden, built in 1888 in Maine, carried coal from Norfolk to Boston.

Left Newport News in October With Twenty Five People Aboard
The Norris of Damariscotta Maine sailed from Newport News October 15 carrying 1642 tons of coal for Barcelona Spain and has since vanished. Captain J A Barstow commanded with his wife a 19 year old daughter a nephew D W Weeks and three other passengers plus eighteen crew. Included were H B Hyler Thomaston Edward Hanewrinkle Richmond VA and Dr J P Hubbard Norfolk. The vessel, about twenty years old, is said to have carried 100 tons more coal than usual.
