Captain Edward Nichols a respected retired shipmaster died this afternoon after a long illness of heart failure. Born in Nantucket in 1813 he spent thirty seven years at sea in Arctic and Pacific oceans and in whale fisheries sailing from New Bedford. He served as master of a vessel for over sixteen years before 1864.
Curiaco Feb 11. Presidents of the Interstate Railway Association accept resignations of Union Pacific and Chicago and Northwestern with withdrawals to take effect Feb 25 and 26. Western Freight Bureau rejects Burlington Northern bid to cut Chicago St Paul freight rates 3343 percent. manager signals a ten day move to implement the cut.
Nashua New Hampshire February 11 there is no change in the labor situation tonight with both sides firm operatives held meetings but outcome not known.
Steamship arrivals reported from multiple ports include Catalonia from Liverpool reaching Boston February 11, Shanemore from Boston to Baltimore February 10, City of Atlanta from Haifa to New York February 11, Ripon City from Garrucha off Gibraltar February 9, and several others sailing between Boston Baltimore Philadelphia New York and European ports with February 9 to 11 dates. The notices cover ships off Kinsale Dover Lizard and Queenstown with routes to Hamburg Antwerp and Livorno among others.

Parnell, Gladstone, and opposition leaders debate motive, timing, and justice as Sir Edward Clarke and Sir William Harcourt lead contrasting positions on punishment and inquiry.

Grand Forks February 11. A call to arms against the proposed North Dakota lottery frames the moral crisis as a battle to preserve state dignity. The author denounces gambling, likens legalization to prostitution by a pimp, and calls for public protest to protect the state’s honor and families from economic vice.
The Pioneer Press reports from St. Paull Minn March 11 that thousands of settlers stream toward the reservation across the river with hundreds of new houses rising on the town site opposite Chamberlain S D. Agent Anderson defers removal and vows to guard Indian lands while warning that any buildings erected on Indian lands must be cleared by sunset or will be burned. A mixed train carries settlers and a special train brings more than 500 people as colonies form to claim lands on the 10,000,000 acres acquired by the government.
The Cabinet resigned on February 10 after ten months in office as several members sought election. Harmony remains between the outgoing officials and President Caceres, who is now forming a new ministry.
Sordan by Danlap's Cable News Company reports that the American squadron arrived in Ville Francur today as part of ongoing naval movements.
Official returns show George A. Scott Gentile elected mayor by a large majority. Louis Hyams Gentile re elected city recorder with 6839 votes and J. 3. Walden Gentile treasurer with 659. E.R. Clute Gentile assessor 406 and J. M. Young Gentile marshal 773. Gentile ticket wins fifteen council seats by 300 to 400 majorities, gaining control of the municipal council for the first time in city history.
WashteTon February 11. Naval orders grant six months leave to Lieutenant Charles O Allibone from the 13th. Lieutenant W S Nelson at the naval ordnance proving ground receives four months leave starting March 1. Both officers are from the naval station New London.
