Boston Theatre Lease Ends as Esteemed Manager Hosts Benefit

The fifth and final year of Mr Thomas Barry’s Boston Theatre lease ends in two weeks. A crowd-filled farewell benefit featured The Last of the Pigtails and The Cataract of the Ganges with Davenport, Barry, and others. Barry thanked the audience, praised colleagues, and urged support for brother actor Mr Pilgrim as he faces future efforts at the National Theatre. A series of tributes and upcoming performances at the HowArp, Museum, Music Hall, and Diorama of India filled the day, with praise for Barry’s leadership and calls to patronize Boston’s stage career.

Senate debates tax equalization and constitutional powers bill

In Friday session a substitute to the tax equalization measure was offered while a balance of acts moved through the Senate. A bill authorizing widening the Boston and Maine Railroad bridge over the Charles River was reported. A constitutional powers amendment for the Commander in Chief over state military forces failed by 16 to 17 on engrossment. The Auditor submitted ten year executive council expense table averaging about $7000 annually. The House refused a third reading to a corporation name change bill. A petition urged commissioners to study potato blight microscopically. The House granted the Hall of Representatives for a Federal Relations hearing on fugitive slave remedy next Thursday at 10 A M.
