W. J. Dennett of Protective Company 1 was cut by broken glass and several firemen were partially overcome by smoke in a two alarm blaze at 28 29 India Wharf just before 11 last night. The five story brick building was thought ready to break through but the flames were confined to the brick by a dangerous, rapid response from the adjoining wooden structures. Firefighters fought the blaze from nearby roofs as hot air explosions occurred and several men narrowly avoided injuries.
Alfred P. Scigliano a prominent North End civic and political figure and former Boston common council member who served in the state house in 1910 and 1911 died suddenly at his sister’s Arlington Heights home at age 45. He had long operated a restaurant on North Street and remained active in ward politics. He died after supper at 7 o clock leaving a wife and one year old child.
Avel of 417 Somerville Avenue, Somerville, resisted when Sergeant James F. Lynch and Officers Lacey and Shepherd raided his apartment for liquor. Officers seized moonshine, wine, and a still. Avel assaulted an officer and was charged with assault and battery.
Dr. Michael M. Stevens of Woburn faces a manslaughter charge in the death of Grace M. Logue. The Middlesex grand jury indicted him after she died from a morphine overdose given for a toothache. He pled not guilty and posted $1000 bail supplied by three of his patients. no trial date set.

Cardinal O Connell of Boston hosted Cardinal Csernoch and Cardinal Piffi in Rome who praised U S aid to Austria Hungary. Piffi called America the Good Samaritan and Savior and said the papal constitution should be amended to allow American representation at future conclaves.

J. Thomas Gettigan, manager of an Economy grocery in Revere, is charged with killing his aunt Mrs. Elizabeth M. Cook to gain inheritance. Police say he poisoned her to avoid obstacle to a larger fortune from his uncle.
World heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey announced his engagement to actress Bebe Daniels in Hollywood. The wedding date was not fixed, but reports say it will occur within weeks and both may co star in upcoming films.
Few friends have seen the big champ and the noted star together recently. Gossip around the studios has connected their names, though details remain scarce and unconfirmed.
A early morning basement fire at 1498 Washington Street forced several people including children into the street. Fire started likely from an overheated furnace. Sergeant Miller, Sergeant Hanrahan, and Patrolman Wright woke occupants and helped two children escape. Occupants sought shelter at a nearby restaurant then returned home.
Gettigan is charged with murder and procuring another to commit murder. Police allege he hired John P. McDonald to kill his uncle Clinton W. Richardson to gain an estate over $200,000. Richard Henry Rice longtime General Electric Lynn manager and Boston Chamber of Commerce member died of heart disease while starting a snow shoe hike at Boston Lake George New York. His death followed the earlier passing of his son Richard Drury Rice at Royal Victoria Hospital Montreal. A double funeral is planned for father and son in Lynn after their burials in Pine Grove Cemetery.
South Norwalk Connecticut February 10 Florence Johnson aged 13 died today from tetanus linked to a vaccination wound. Dr Robert M Wolfe said the puncture wound was the only entry point for the infection. The case is under investigation.
