A gas main leak near the C and Tudor streets corner in South Boston endangered residents as gas spread through sewers. Nineteen people were seriously affected and doctors treated the affected. Police ordered evacuations until the leak could be found and fixed.
Colonel Curtis Guild Jr declines the Second Massachusetts Brigade command after a drawn-out county election in the State House. Guild wins on the twelfth ballot with nine votes to Pew's five, Whitney two, and Perrins zero, leaving an unsettled contest for his successor.
A gas main leak near Tudor and C streets caused widespread poisoning with residents from 60 Tudor to 92 C and 10 C streets evacuated. Washington Feb 10 President McKinley has ensured three generations in the naval service by filling the single Annapolis vacancy with the younger son of Rear Admiral Thomas Selfridge Jr. He is to report next May. The boy’s grandfather, Rear Admiral Thomas O. Selfridge, retired in 1866 and is nearly 100 years old.
London reports Lord Kitchener says British forces suffered 24 killed and 23 wounded at Orange Camp while Boers left 20 dead and were repulsed. Dispatch describes Ermelo occupation by February 6 and a Bosra force of 70 retreating eastward amid moving families and stock.
