Japan’s Naval Victory and Corean Landing Reported

Despatches claim Japan fought three battles within 24 hours and crippled or sunk Russian ships at Port Arthur and in Chemulpo. A noon bombardment crippled more ships as nine Russian vessels were taken out of action. Japan has landed a large army and seized Corea, with heavy Russian casualties reported.

Japanese bombard Port Arthur in naval clash

A telegram from Viceroy Alexeiff reports a Japanese squadron of 15 battleships and cruisers began bombardment of Port Arthur. After an hour the ships withdrew. Russian losses include two naval officers and 51 wounded, nine dead on land, with batteries suffering one death and three wounded. Ships Poltava Digna Askold and Novik damaged.

Japanese Crush Russians at Port Arthur Advance Squadron Strike

Despatch from Che Foo dated Feb 9 reports Vice-Admiral Togo leading 16 Japanese battleships and cruisers with torpedo craft in a night approach to Port Arthur. Japanese scouts supplied warning of the Russian fleet’s precarious position, enabling a stealthy battle formation on Sunday.
