Fire destroys Stevens block in Worcester. 150000 loss
A severe afternoon blaze at 24 44 South Bridge Street, Worcester, destroyed the Stevens block adjoining Franklin Square Theatre. Twelve firefighters were overcome by smoke, several cut by falling glass, and a gas explosion complicated efforts. Loss estimated at 125000 with 80000 insured. many occupants escaped only with ladders or rope rescues. A roof collapsed at 450 pm and a later gas blast trapped the chemical crew. Eleanor Barker of 23 Ball Street reported hair loss to Jack the Slasher amid reports of a North End mob pursuit and a man in Lynn selling children’s hair to wig-makers.
