Watson Pleads in Vain In City Council Ballot Drama

After two indecisive ballots the Boston City Council adjourned without electing a president for the year. Watson led with three votes on the last ballot while Brickley had two and Lane Collins Donoghue Ford shared one each. Watson urged the chair to back his candidacy, but a motion to adopt 1920 rules passed and he withdrew a motion to open committee meetings to the public. The meeting featured Boston League of Women Voters observers who may appeal for open sessions. The council also referred mayoral appropriation orders totaling 2,602,500 for municipal improvements including street and sewer projects, a Forest Hills courthouse, land, a West Roxbury branch library, and Marine Park headhouses.
