The Manitoba Hotel, the largest in the Canadian West, burned at about 1 am on February 8. The building, erected at a cost of 500000 dollars, is a total loss while guests are confined inside for the curling bonspiel. St Paul and Duluth curlers used the hotel as their headquarters, but all are safe.
Two alarms from Box 10 and Box 15 reported at 10 o clock last night for a fire on the second floor of the building at 247 North street. The alarms caused a mix up among the fire apparatus. The fire was confined to the tailor shop of Israel Freedman and the loss will reach $300.
Fitchburg February 7 A fire partially destroyed a four tenement house owned by J J Heffernan this morning with estimated loss around 4000 dollars.
Patrick Flanagan of Ayer Junction, a laborer, tracked down former co workers who robbed him of 550 dollars last September. After identifying two in Lawrence, he followed a third to Boston and confronted Michael Scanlan on Merrimac street. Scanlan was arrested at Joy Street station. Flanagan plans to return to work.
Advertisement claims L B Q tablets remove the cause of La Grippe with the genuine mark L B Q on each tablet sold for 25 cents. It emphasizes that the grip cure that does cure is the product being marketed.
Parliament reopened with the queen's speech read. Conservatives Bagot and Danvers Smith urged closer Anglo American ties, while Campbell-Bannerman and Lord Salisbury spoke on peace, China, and Sudan. Salisbury praised US style foreign relations and cautioned Britain cannot reveal full details. Agreement with Germany noted as favorable to friendship and world peace.
The Knights of Columbus at their State convention voted to establish a James E Hayes scholarship at Boston College in memory of the late member. The fund aims for 15000 dollars. 4431 dollars had been raised toward a 5000 dollar bed fund for Carney Hospital. Delegates exceed 160 from 1% councils. opening in Columbus Hall.
In New Britain Connecticut on February 7 John Zwick aged 2 drank fifteen glasses of whiskey in a Main street saloon on a $10 wager and was found dead in his bed the next day likely from liquor effects, authorities say.
Chief of Police Cloyes announces a general order effective at roll call tomorrow detailing moves within Cambridge police. Assignments shift across Stations 1, 2, and 3, with captains Murray Pullen and Mulveay and officers Howe Murray McCabe and Aberle reassigned to new posts.

The escaping man is believed to have kept much of the loot.
Charles H. Milliken a Chelsea barber and juror in the Scollans Mulrey trial was arrested on a warrant charging him with taking $200 to influence a verdict in favor of defendant Thomas J Scollans. The arrest followed a court revelation that the money was displayed and that more was promised. Milliken denied the accusation and said he never received money. The grand jury may hear the bribery and perjury charges next. Milliken 37, has a wife and two children and runs a barber shop at 114 Arlington street Chelsea.
A small American recon patrol near Caloocan is attacked by Filipino forces. Lieutenant Alford and a private from the Twentieth Kansas Infantry are killed, six others wounded. Kansas Volunteers counterattack, driving rebels into Caloocan while gunboats shell suburbs. General Otis recalls troops. Continued on Page 6.
The House naval committee in Washington reports twelve new warships approved with three more under consideration. Proposed: three seagoing battleships about 13 500 tons at 6 600 000 each, three armored cruisers about 12 000 tons at 4 000 000 each, six cruisers about 2500 tons at 1 141 800 each, and three protected cruisers about 6 000 tons at 2 150 000 each.
Rear Admiral Sampson was hosted at an informal reception by the Algonquin Club at 217 Commonwealth Avenue yesterday. A light luncheon accompanied his visit as about 400 members and guests greeted him for handshakes during a two hour event led by President General Charles H. Taylor and the club ushers.
Commodore Cromwell will join American women in decorating graves of Maine disaster victims on the anniversary. He sent an officer to Monsignor Santander, bishop of Havana, to seek permission for the ceremony. The bishop approved the act but said a Protestant service in the cemetery requires Rome’s approval.
