Diary of Salem Lawyer Pynchon Chronology of a Century
Oliver edits the diary of William Pynchon of Salem and adds concise notes. The record covers 1776 to near his death in 1789 with social life, food, weather, and events from May 1780 to visits by Lafayette, plus later remarks on the family and local society. Boston Fire Department History Commentary Critique
A review of Mr Brayley’s history of the Boston Fire Department critiques its overall plan and its heavy use of portraits. It notes uneven execution in Part III and suggests concise biographies and better integration of famous fires and archival sources to strengthen the work. The piece praises some illustrative citations but condemns overly long, poorly rendered portraits and calls for more focused content.

Review of Platt and Darby Works and Weaker Verse
A critique of Life by James Platt lauds its bourgeois themes and references Canon Farrar while noting padding. John Darby’s Man and His World is judged less Socratic and unlikely to clarify prior work. A brief blurb on William T. Washburn’s Spring and Summer praises only a few lines amid overall tame verse.
