Thorns and needles in Gurowski volume attack Seward

The piece attacks Seward contrasting him with a real statesman who writes only when forced by circumstances. It cites Old Abe and recalls General Walsh’s December 1860 remark that Lincoln should appoint a very eminent private secretary after meeting him in Springfield.

Kansas Legislature Votes to Elect U S Senator

Private reports from Kansas say the Legislature agreed to a Tuesday election for U S Senator to replace Gen Lane though the body was elected with a pledge that no election would occur this term. Lane’s term ends March 4. Major General Blunt departs for Gen Curtis’s department and will command the Indian Territory district from Fort Smith with ample forces.

Blockade Runner Wild Darrell Destroyed Near New Topsail Inlet

Despatch reports the fast blockade runner Wild Darrell was destroyed near New Topsail Inlet after running ashore and unloading most of her cargo. The action was carried out by Sassacus and Florida under orders from North Atlantic Blockading Squadron command.

Empire Works Fire Destroys West Building in New York

The Empire Works on East 24th street burned last night destroying the west building about 60 by 200 feet with an estimated 150000 dollars in losses. Many occupants were insured. A schooner loaded with hay and Government stores burned in the North River this morning. Steamers Cambria and Thomas A. Scott returned from Fortress Monroe with the latter in tow after a broken propeller. Reports from Washington describe casualties from a railroad accident. The Mercury claims Sherman’s expedition totals 70000 men with 15000 negro troops heading toward Jackson Meridian and Montgomery. Halleck may resign if Grants promotion passes. Draft delays and officer pay suspensions are anticipated. In Orange New Jersey Bailey Everett store robbed of 2500 dollars.
