For twenty four hours. New England and eastern New York expect fair weather with clearing Rhode Island. Temperatures will be slightly colder before rising. Winds come from the west, diminishing in force.

In the Sound off New Haven two sailors from the schooner John F Cairns deserted after alleged captain cruelty. They built a raft, were rescued alive. one man died, Leander Kaldron survived and hid his name, Barrenthin died. Kaldron, from Boston, is in Chambers Street Hospital in critical condition.
Ottawa February 6 The opposition resolution defines the policy for the session. It states it is essential for the government and Parliament of Canada to have power to negotiate commercial treaties with foreign powers. It calls for an humble address to Her Majesty asking for authority to engage with foreign states on commercial arrangements, with Parliament approval.
Washington February 6 Senator George offers amendments to the anti trust bill aiming to curb price fixing by trusts. Provisions would dismiss suits over contract rights tied to affected merchandise with double costs to defendants suspend duties on affected articles for ninety days and allow repeated suspensions. It also declares affected goods unlawful in interstate and foreign commerce and directs swift action by the President and interstate commissioners to prevent transport.
In Appany New York on February 6 the Senate approved a bill establishing a State naval militia, amid debate over states rights and national defense. Supporters argued for training citizens for sea service and defending harbors, while opponents warned of costs and questioned necessity. The measure passed 17 to 13.

Inspector Bonfield and Captain Schaack of Chicago were indefinitely suspended from office amid corruption allegations tied to gamblers and criminals. Detective Loewenstein is suspended alongside them after aiding in the Lingg arrest. Mayor Roche signs the precautionary order saying it does not resolve the accusations.
Californians split between John F. Swift and M. M. Estee for a Cabinet post. Republicans back Estee, General Harrison opposes him, and lawmakers fear alienating voters. A California observer quips they may “fall to the ground” between the two stools. Also in Indianapolis New is in town on private business amid Windom boom chatter and factional talks.
In Montreal the blizzard keeps Carnival visitors amid heavy snow and late trains. Ottawa reports widespread rail delays and the Boston line cancellation. Winchester records 34 and freezing, with zero expected by morning. Sandy Beach notes a northwest blizzard with twenty inches of snow and suspensions of business and trains.
