Washington February five doctors report Senator Hanna gravely ill with irregular typhoid fever. His age sixty six and prior rheumatic attacks worsen prognosis though no organic complications are noted. He was barely conscious at times and exhausted, amid extreme weakness and nervous low mood. In San Domingo on February 1 insurgents fired on the auxiliary cruiser Yankee killing engineer J. C. Johnston. United States Minister Powell ordered the captain to take drastic measures to avenge the death and affront to the American flag. Johnston to be buried ashore as the Yankee may shell the town.
A cloudy forecast for Boston and nearby areas expects rising temperatures on Saturday with increased cloudiness and a chance of rain or snow. Sunday remains unsettled with more precipitation possible and slightly warmer conditions expected.
For Saturday the forecast calls for snow or rain with somewhat warmer conditions. Sunday and Monday should be fair and mild. Charles E. Lessor provides the outlook.
Frightened occupants mostly women rushed from a four story tenement at 6 St Paul Street when a blaze broke out around 11 pm in freezing weather. Esther Hill led alarm then Ida McCully signaled officer Brock. Della Hays crossed roofs to safety, Rose Henley retrieved a coat, Ladder 15 crew aided her to ground. Continued on Page Eight.
War in the Far East is viewed as inevitable with Japan pressing terms Russia will not accept. Tokyo reports show elder statesmen met Feb 3 and 4 to decide final measures. funds raised for the war fund exceed £2,000,000 yen.
An advertisement warns that the current pneumonia epidemic causes more deaths than smallpox and promotes Father John’s Medicine as a safe, non poisonous remedy to prevent pneumonia and end lingering colds.
Dennis O Connor 39 Utica street confessed to shooting and murdering his brother Jeremiah in their rooms yesterday afternoon claiming persecution by a secret society. Police say two bullet holes were found in Jeremiah and Dennis still held the revolver when arrested.
Patrick M. Doyle a wealthy Lewiston Maine property owner took laudanum in a Quincy House room in Boston after a week of restless activity. He left a note for his sister and died beside an empty bottle. Doyle 40, prominent in Lewiston, had quarrels with his brother James over business ventures.
Chief Rufus R. Wade of the Massachusetts State Police lies dangerously ill at his Somerville home. Family at his bedside as complications threaten recovery after a severe cold. Continued on page 7, fourth column.
