February 5 reports show President-elect Cleveland meeting a diverse mix of visitors from across the nation. Notable figures included Mayor Grace, Senator Gorman, Gen. Hancock, and others, discussing cabinet hopes and state matters amid lunch-time interruptions and crowded parlors at the hotel.
Frank W. Brooks, born 1921 in Chesterfield New Hampshire, died in Perattleboro Vermont after paralysis. He lived earlier in San Francisco with the power firm George J. Brooks & Co. and returned to Brettleboro after the war. He served as an Episcopal church warden and was active in public affairs. Survived by a widow and four children.
Honorable Thomas A. Hendricks and party arrived in Atlanta and were toasted at the Kimball House. Crowds gathered as he spoke from a hotel balcony praising Democratic gains. He noted unity of the nation and referenced New York's pivotal vote leaving Georgia excited for the trip to Birmingham and the New Orleans exposition.
Henry Burton, arrested with Cunningham's brown trunk, was arraigned at Bow Street police court on complicity in the Tower explosions. Constable Jarvis testified Burton claimed the trunk, described his travels from America aboard the Oregon, and admitted buying the trunk for eight shillings. Burton spoke only haltingly as the judge heard the stiff testimony.
The Commissioners awarded judgments with 4 percent interest from dates named. Notables include Charles Hopkins 300 and Mary J Van Dyek administratrix 4939, with many others such as Alexander Black administrator 43 and Abigail H Berry administrator 60. The list covers administratrixes and administrators from 1863 64 including Bridge Lord firms and Hoyt 71 66.
New York marks the opening of the New York Athletic Club new house tonight. The venue is described as the finest of its kind in the world with William R. Travers and Herman Oelrichs in charge. A large crowd attended the ceremony. Separately the New York stock exchange securities committee reports the coupons due February 1 on the New York Susquehanna and Western debentures are not being paid in full. The company is paying half in cash and funding the remainder for ten years, and bonds will be called coupon on and coupon off until further notice.
At a chamber gathering in New York the invitation from the National Cotton Planters Association to visit the New Orleans exposition on February 12 was accepted and a committee will be formed for the trip. A prior debate led to reconsideration of a resolution demanding abolition of the inland transportation system as unjust to seaboard merchants and harmful to internal revenue.
A five year high six team cooking main event drew Wall Street interest near New York. Tickets cost 10 and were limited to 100. Long Island and New York birds each fielded 17 birds for nine battles. Long Island won six bouts while New York took the remaining three. Over 8000 attended from various bands.
A New York investor offers 75000 to back Salem typewriter manufacture with 25000 extra hoped from parties there. Shell piles along Fairhaven river valued at 100000. Rowe shells alone 27000. Mrs Newton robbed in Southington of papers and 300. John Sullivan and wife found dead in Seymour from coal gas. Shaw tannery restart promises Maine jobs. Worcester drunken man picked up in coffin wagon. Daniel Harrington found dead in woods after leaving home. Connecticut troops’ captured flag from Irish Bend to be returned. Gilbert Worden of Halifax hanged amid family scandal related to an illegitimate birth.

Rev Father OBrien to St James Harrison Ave. Mrs Clara Arthur Mason wife of Rev Marcus Mason Assam mission died at Tura Garo Hills Dec 9 1884. Watchman Hendricks reports Cleveland visit and praises his administration.

Reed and McMillan clash over the rule while river and harbor concerns trigger charges of public plunder. Breckenridge defends the committee. Morrison's Illinois bid rises amid monetary debate on silver and currency value.
Washington February 5. In a House session Mr Breckenridge of Arkansas raised a privilege question and read extracts from speeches by Mr Reed of Maine and Mr Hiscock of New York denouncing the rivers and harbors committee. The committee condemned the imputations as base and groundless while pledging to let remarks stand as debate.
Washington February 5 Senate debate centers on the trade dollar with Senator Bayard opposing redemption at face value. He argues the coin should not be treated as currency, likening it to silver bars and noting it never truly circulated in the United States.
The House spent the afternoon on the river and harbor appropriation with Spooner arguing against perceived locality discrimination. Rhode Island received strict 25 percent adherence, while committee members favored higher shares for states represented. Massachusetts members pushed harbor projects at Hingham and Sandy Bay with detailed conditions.
George E. Lemon, pension attorney, told the House committee that he paid Col. Ingersoll 2500 and Judge Wilson 1000 to assure passage of the latest pension attorney fee increase bill. Buildings on Barclay Street and Parker Place suffered 60,000 in damage, Major & Knapp presses nearly 150,000, and Fritchie’s goods 25,000. Also hit were John Wygand’s crockery 30,000 and Edward Miller & Co. 30,000. A curtain fire at 212 West Canton Street caused 25 in damage. A stable blaze on Maverick Street led to box 183 alarm.
A Montreal detective returning from the south says he attended two secret dynamiter meetings in New York on Chambers Street. The gatherings used the password Ireland and freedom and drew 150 participants, with plans to send delegates to Canada and Ottawa to bomb Parliament House left wing.
Evangelist D. L. Moody celebrated his forty eighth birthday at the Northfield homestead with Mrs Moody in her eightieth year. Festivities honored her, many friends sent gifts and letters, and 360 pupils from Moody schools observed a holiday to pay respects to Gandma Moody.
In Springfield on February 5 the Republican senatorial caucus nominated Gen. Logan after Mason presided. Mason warned they could block a Democrat’s election until a Republican governor is appointed. Logan spoke with feeling, thanking the caucus, pledging to win honestly and honorably, and to conduct the fight under scrutiny of honorable men.

Hon Joseph Story recent resignations as superintendent of the Sabbath school at Bowdoin-square Baptist church, visited Montreal during the carnival. His longtime Sunday school friends organized a social and supper at the Merona Thursday attended by 225 people. A gold beaded ebony cane was presented by H A Inman, with others delivering addresses and fond memories. Story expressed gratitude and the gathering closed with well wishes for his long life.
The regular semi annual session of the grand lodge of Odd Fellows convened at Odd Fellows hall. The forenoon heard reports and noted many new members. Financials show solid condition with 172 subordinate lodges and a six month gain of 330 members. Total members reach 30,115 while benefits and relief payments exceed 47 thousand dollars. Daughters of Rebekah report 2472 brothers and 2503 sisters. The grand master also reviewed new lodges and hall dedications and urged paying district deputy grand masters’ travel expenses.
Kate H. Summers, 12, daughter of Martin T. Summers, was struck by a sleigh on Liberty street in Lowell Mass. and died within half an hour from injuries suffered during the evening coasting outing.

Arctic voyage sailor. Augustus P. Dutton of Nashua dies suddenly at 59. Edward Hyde of Cambridge dies at 76. former treasurer of Cambridgeport Savings. Nowmes Reed of New York dies on his 48th birthday. brother Rev. James Reed noted. Other Cambridge and Boston figures noted with connections to Union League, chamber of commerce, and local institutions.

Hon Charles Theodore Russell lectured at the Blackstore club of Boston University on civil service reform. He argued it must be universal in national state and municipal government, arguing spoils systems corrupt administration and parties must act together to restore merit and integrity.
The South Boston Yacht Club marked its 17th anniversary with a grand Berkeley Hall ball on Thursday evening. About 200 couples attended as club regalia and emblems adorned the hall. Commodore Henry M Hunsey led the night’s festivities with Mr Cherrington and Raeoles assisting. supper was served for 300 by Caterer Lufts.
