The German general strike in Germany waned as military pressure aided by authorities forced workers back to jobs. In France, Cambridge Harvard alumnus Francis Peabody Magoun Jr. and another Boston native in the Lafayette Escadrille gained fame after Magoun shoots down a German ace who had 16 prior Allied victims.
Action to be taken at request of road theatres likely to be closed ahead of the movies as stores and offices adjust hours.
State fuel administrators told National Administrator Garfield that coal shortages are so severe some states must keep the Monday closing order. A decision was not announced but is believed to keep the restriction in force. Garfield and McAdoo will discuss changes tomorrow. Boston Fuel Committee to adjust hours within a day or two due to traffic impacts from uniform closing rules.
In their first real battle with German forces the American troops achieved a substantial victory. The success came from the highly effective American artillerymen who shattered what appeared to be a bold offensive before it could begin.
Dispatches indicate German forces, after weeks of watching for the U S troop position, massed troops for a possible assault. The American line repelled a severe barrage, tearing up trenches and cutting barbed wire with 75s. Despite heavy fighting elsewhere, no sign of the promised large offensive on the western fronts.
Kingdon Gould Sergi, who began as a private in the National Army at Camp Dix New Jersey, is promoted to battalion sergeant-major by Major-General Scott. He recently declined officers training, preferring service as a sergeant in the intelligence office, now holding the highest non commissioned rank.
Within hours of taking office at Faneuil Hall Mayor Peters canceled eight Curley era appointments including Edward B. Dailey Philip O'Brien Fred T. Bolton Joseph I O'Connell and others. William P. Fowler was named temporary corporation counsel and William J. Hennessy’s chairmanship of the Schoolhouse Commission was revoked.
Ex-Congressman OConnell loses any chance for corporation counsel appointment and several candidates including Murphy Shaw Corcoran and Fleming are also ruled out, signaling a shakeup in the selection process.
Stockholm Feb 4 The American consul at Helsingfors Mr Haynes replies to Ira Nelson Morris indicating the 15 American residents in the city are well.
A brutal cold wave grips the region with subzero readings nationwide. Forecasters expect lows from 4 below to 226 above were reported as wind and arctic air chilled Boston and surrounding areas. Store windows frosted over and residents kept warm by extra layers and stairs due to power and heating strain.
Amsterdam Feb 4 The Reichstag president refused to convoke a special session after the Socialist Democratic party demanded it. He said the other parties opposed the call, per the Berlin Tageblatt report.
Secretary Daniels defended naval transport capacity, saying the navy will provide enough ships to land half a million American troops in France early this year. He spoke after Senator Hitchcock accused Secretary Baker’s claim of being preposterous, arguing that shipping and supply aims were wildly exaggerated.
Rome reports Venice and several towns on the Venetian Plain bombed by enemy aircraft. Padua Treviso and Mestre suffer extensive damage with civilian casualties while Venice escapes major damage. Artillery and trench mortar activity noted in the Lagarina valley and near the coast with prisoner captures at Castione and Cape Sile. Aircraft return safely. Rail traffic east of the Piave disrupted by air raids.
Proclamation of martial law in Berlin and Brandenburg curbed street disorder with threats of court martial. Across the country quiet prevails except in Jena where student sympathy may fuel new trouble. Foreign ministers and General von Ludendorff plan talks to ease tensions in Germany and Austria-Hungary amid peace pressure.
Four million gallons escaped when a water main exploded at Broad way and Market streets in Cambridge. The flood covered ten blocks, flooded cellars, extinguished furnace fires, halted streetcar service, and left a slick ice coating on streets.
Ayer, February 4. In the town housing the 76th Division, residents voted against liquor sales with 378 opposed and 63 in favor. Military authorities and local groups led a vigorous campaign. Brigadier General Weigel warned no soldiers would enter if the town voted wet.
The L management proposed opening and closing hours to stretch the morning and evening rush, claiming it would ease congestion. The current pattern shows identical peak times each morning and evening, and it remains uncertain if the plan will be approved, as stated by David A. Ellis, chairman.
