The bark Charles Loring carrying 380 000 feet of lumber from Savannah to New York was sunk four miles off Sea Girt New Jersey after a dense fog collision with the Old Dominion steamer Seneca. All aboard survived with no injuries.
The steamer Seneca and bark Loring collided in dense fog near the coast. Captain DeBuhr and nine crew survived after lifeboats were launched. The Seneca suffered damaged dining room glass and a crowd panic, while the Loring, carrying lumber from Savannah, sank with a cargo valued at 18 000 dollars and no insurance. A dog survived aboard the Loring and a cat remained aloft as the wreck reduced to a near-submerged state.
The freight steamer Warren bound from Fall River to New York ran aground on East Dumpling Rock in heavy fog near Narragansett Bay. In South Boston yesterday morning a gas leak endangered over twenty people, including families of Frederica Hahn Ellen Moriarty John Sullivan and Johanna Gallagher, who were saved by Dr James S McDonald from a broken pipe.
Mr Hahn slept as his five children Fannie C. fourteen Hermina twelve Frederic Jr. ten Walter five and Herbert four showed signs of gas exposure. Patrolman Shea Corbett and Dr. MacDonald aided survivors, saving over twenty people as pipes split near the sewer main. Three cats died. no hospitalizations occurred.
Thomas Bailey Aldrich was taken to the Massachusetts Homeopathic Hospital Saturday where a minor surgical operation was very successfully performed by Dr. Horace Packard. Mr. Bailey is attended by Dr. J. P. Southerland and everything now points to his speedy recovery.
