A letter to the editor argues against subsidies and fleet-building to restore maritime power. It contends true strength came from gradual progress, not state payoffs, cites Britain and Germany as outcomes of maritime supremacy, and notes Congress embargoes have drained local marine interest while praising Bremen and Hamburg ship operations. The piece laments lost private stake in sea trade and warns against artificial excitement to revive shipping.
