Fire destroys Covil and Pease livery stable horses burned

Nantucket February 2 a fire at 1130 p m gutted the Covil and Pease livery stable in a heavy northeast gale. Firefighters saved only a few carriages as the building and contents burned. Six horses perished and part of the property was insured. Cause unknown.

Hard Luck of the Hussey at Sea Near New York

A Cunard steamer Umbria reports to Randall and Kilham that the fishing schooner E C Hussey was blown offshore with its ensign down. A dory crew member named Frost said the crew had only one day of fishing left and planned to head for port. The Umbria supplied provisions and verified the schooner is intact.

Charlestown Woman Arrested for Forged Check on Local Bank

Frances Steward, 35, was jailed at Station 15 on a charge of forging W R Vinton’s name on a 119 dollar check drawn at the Charlestown Five Cents Savings Bank. Vinton, an iceman with the Boston Ice Co., lives at 2812 Lincoln Street where Steward worked as housekeeper. Steward confessed the forgery but claimed she burned the money. she resisted and damaged a wall and window when arrested by Patrolman Barker.

Southampton Man Dead From Fall at Jekyl Island Club

M J Grogan a white waiter at Jekyl Island jumped from a third story window in the club annex at 4 am. He died of the fall and his remains were sent to Southampton Massachusetts. Grogan's death was attributed to drink.
