Four Family Nearly Perishes In Gas Flood At Corona News Letter Editor's Home

Editor Chamberlain of the Corona News-Letter, his wife, and an infant nearly suffocated by coal gas. A neighbor, John Krinkerhoff, knocked and gained entry after no response. The family lay unconscious in bed as coal gas from a stove with shut damper escaped through a pipe opening. Resuscitation efforts lasted hours with Dr. Tygert aiding. the wife recovered by noon, the husband remained unconscious until afternoon.

Linder Eider Goes Aground On Atherfield Rocks Night

The North German Lloyd steamer Eider from New York to Bremen went ashore in dense fog at Atherfield Rocks nine miles west of Ventnor Isle of Wight. After jettisoning cotton to lighten her, lifeboats and tugs attempted to refloat her. Passengers, including many nationalities, were landed safely by nightfall with shore support arranged. a grand tow attempt was planned at midnight.
