Canadian Railway Traffic Treasury Decision Delayed
Senator Washburn defends New England and Northwest interests as the Windom death delays Treasury action against Canadian railroads. He argues against licensing and constraints on Canadian roads, notes subsidies totals, and urges preserving cheap, natural routes for U S commerce. He warns against restricting rail access and emphasizes the value of cross border transport for midwest and plains states.

Water Colors in New York Exhiition Review
New York January 31 The water color show is praised for wall and frame arrangement but criticized for overbearing gilt frames harming subject focus. The west gallery shines with Salamander performances and noted artists like Platt Ranger and Kappes receive comment for bold color and mood. Several works attract buyers, while the absence of a single great centerpiece prompts readers to seek standout pieces among many gems.

English Captain's Story of Bark Lydia Peschau Seizure
The steamship Andes brings as passengers the captain and ten crew of the British bark Lydia Peschau seized by Venezuela on Oct. 18. The captain was taken ill and ashore at Trinidad, while the bark, under the mate, was water short and anchored at Margarita Island. Soldiers boarded, took the mate and second mate ashore, leaving no one aboard to sail. The vessel was stripped of sails and valuables. Attempts to reclaim the bark failed. British officials and the governor of Trinidad intervened. The captain was ordered to proceed to New York, awaiting settlement. The bark had been en route from Wilmington, North Carolina to Trinidad with yellow pine lumber.
