In Lawrence on January 31 a general strike was voted by 95 members of the textile workers general committee representing all nationalities. About 35 000 mill operatives are to walk out next Monday morning over demands for a 48 hour work week with 54 hours pay. Picketing decisions to be set at a later meeting.
Delegates from the Central Labor Union urged postponement of a strike vote but were overruled by the general committee. A telegram from John Golden of the United Textile Workers of America prompted jeers and strong language. The committee set a 2 30 pm hearing for Organizer Rieviere, but refused to delay the vote. Representative Alvan T. Fuller after returning from abroad says a definite policy on the return of American soldiers should be set now to quell uncertainty among troops. He also criticizes the American postal service in France.
Henry H. Hall, Wells Depot preacher and evangelist, faces murder charges in the Maine Supreme Court over the death of his wife Minnie O. Stevens Hall. The State rested its case after closing arguments at 5 p.m. before Judge Scott Wilson.
Washington police probe the killings of T. T. Wong, chief of the Chinese educational mission, and George Washington University students Hsie and Wu. Wong was found on the first floor while the two students lay in the basement after a fellow student alerted authorities following their absence since last Tuesday.
A bill to create a 49th state named The State of Liberty would cover present New York City. Introduced by Senator John J. Dunnigan amid New York ratifying the federal prohibition amendment. The proposal echoed past talk of secession from upstate dominance and a 1915 constitutional convention attempt.
Four of America's ace pilots including Captain Edward V. Rickenbacker of Columbus Ohio arrived in New York on the British steamship Adriatic after earning credit for 26 enemy planes down.
Sir Horace Plunkett arrives in New York aboard the Adriatic for a listening expedition to the United States. He seeks American interest in Ireland's political problem to aid in achieving a solution following his Dublin convention leadership in 1918.

They oppose sending troops to Russia or Poland for police or combat roles, citing strong American opposition to foreign armed intervention.
