An unidentified man found injured in Prince Street basement was listed as dead by police, but City Hospital surgeons insist he is alive and improving. He repeatedly called for Eliza and Gallagher, complicating the case as authorities pursue the true cause of his injuries and identity.
In Marlboro on January 31 an assault occurred on George Eber of Framingham who was in town seeking work. Police allege Edward T. O'Brien and an unknown accomplice carried out the attack. The unidentified suspect was briefly arrested. O'Brien was detained then released on $400 bail for a hearing the next afternoon.
The Machias schooner Fanny Flint collided with the schooner William M. Bird off Pollock Rip lightship and sank a few hours later. The crew evacuated to the Bird, then were brought ashore by Monomoy life saving station volunteers and will depart for Boston tomorrow morning.
Citizens from Boston and surrounding towns petition Massachusetts legislature to have Nantasket Beach and adjoining lands taken by the state and set aside as a public reservation. They cite past lax enforcement of gambling and liquor laws at the Hull beach, urge removal of rowdy elements, and point to Revere Beach as a model of state stewardship. The petition, signed by over 400 prominent residents including John D. Long and Bishop William Lawrence, seeks to protect morals and maintain a safe summer resort.
A four year old, Albert Hayes, fell three floors down an elevator shaft at the Pitts Kimball Company store in Glenwood. His grandmother, shopping for his birthday, watched in horror as he was rushed to Emergency Hospital with a fractured skull and double forearm breaks, dying by midnight despite surgeons efforts. The toy horse he clutched remained at his bedside as a poignant reminder of the birthday tragedy.
Rochester New Hampshire January 31 An 18 year old Annie Cox of Calais Maine was found dead in Henry Provenchia’s Harrison Avenue home. Mrs Lizzie Provenchia confessed to the murder and to planning to kill her husband who escaped with a revolver. she fled on a freight train likely headed to Boston. The sister of the accused was arrested as a witness. no trace of Mrs Provenchia remained by nightfall.
In Amesbury a jealous Mrs. Provenchia confronted her husband and Miss Cox, then fired a four shot revolver, wounding Miss Cox and killing her. she fled by railcar with her sister, while authorities search for her. In separate case, Charles E. Page, Amesbury town poor farm superintendent, died after an inmate, Edward Mann, attacked him during a confrontation over a doorway. Mann is in custody. Page, aged about 54, served nearly twelve years in the role.
Mayor Quincy urged the Legislature to authorize two additional subways in Boston. Senate petitions and a bill described routes from Washington street to north of the B and A tracks toward Causeway Street and from Otter Street under Beacon Hill to Scollay Square, with a referendum attached. Transit Commission could order surface tracks after construction. Boston Merchants' Association pressed for further subway study with a 1900 report.
Daniel Cramer aged 50 of 3 Payson court and a water department worker died suddenly while dining at the tool house on Land First streets in South Boston at 1 o clock yesterday. A doctor found natural causes. Undertaker Cole to arrange disposition of the body.
Stephen Nolan aged 36 of 27 Greenwich Street, employed by Collins and Ham, died after being run over by a cart on Dorchester Avenue yesterday at 3 45 pm. He fell from the cart and the wheel passed over him. He was taken to City Hospital where he died en route. the body was sent to the morgue.
Cologne's feared killer known as the Ripper has struck Solingen in broad daylight, wounding three girls as police search for the elusive assailant. The Netherlands and Germany report similar attacks, with victims increasingly confined indoors after dark and even by day.
An old rotitle advertisement promises a cold cure with L B Q laxative and quinine tablets, claiming refunds if it fails. It touts ready made suits and overcoats at $1 per week, with the largest stock in Rostes in years, from 122 Boylston Street.
